THE CRYSTAL JELLY

One of my favorite cnidarians is the Aequorea Victoria, also called the crystal jelly. This jellyfish is actually transparent, but can be seen because of its ability to reflect light. It has a bell design that allows it to move more easily than most other jellyfish and is usually wider than 3 inches. It also has over 150 tentacles equipped with a toxin used to immobilize prey. The crystal jelly eats mainly soft-bodied animals and can kill prey that is half their size. This species can be found along the western coast of North America. Sadly, most of these jellyfish only live for 6 months or less.
