DUGESIA TIGRINA

Dugesia tigrina is a planarian, so it is free-living. It has easily noticed eyespots, which sense light. This species can be found in freshwater lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds across North America. It has also spread to northwestern Europe and eastern Asia. They are typically brown and white with yellow spots and grow to around 9-15 mm. Sensory lobes cause their heads to look triangular. The main diet of this species consists of insects, aquatic worms, and crustaceans. It is unfortunately not known how long Dugesia tigrina can live. Surprisingly, this flatworm is being used to control mosquito population.
