THE GIANT BARREL SPONGE

The giant barrel sponge, or Xestospongia muta, is often one of the largest species in its habitat and can grow up to 6 feet in diameter. This amazing species is found in coral reefs in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Florida. They are cup-shaped with a rough exterior and are thought to be able to live to be around 2000 years old, as they only grow a little over a centimeter per year. This peculiarly shaped body causes it to be inhabited by many animals, including crabs, shrimp, and fish. Plankton is the primary food source of this species, which eats as water is filtered through its body. The giant barrel sponge can be brown, red-brown, rose-purple, or gray.
